Planar layers are the general term when different dimensions are closely related, forming a planar group. In that case, the planar group is the plane, and the individual dimensions are planar layers.
The PlanarLayer category can also be used when a single plane suffers a fundamental change. For example, the change of Lorwyn to Shadowmoor, or the change of Mirrodin to New Phyrexia.
